A VPN that works perfectly in Chicago can fail to connect at all once you land. Blocks depend on the country, the network and sometimes the day. In this section we gather what we learned destination by destination, along with the settings to take care of before you leave.

The table below sums up the situations we ran into or documented. It doesn't replace reading the local rules: in several of these countries VPN use is regulated, and the rules change.
| Country | What breaks there | What to set up |
|---|---|---|
| China | Google services, Western social networks and many messaging apps don't respond. Regular VPN connections often get recognized. | Two VPNs installed and tested before you leave, a mode for restrictive networks turned on, the support instructions saved offline. |
| United Arab Emirates | Voice and video calls on several messaging apps are restricted. | A VPN installed before you arrive and a close look at the local rules, because use is regulated. |
| Russia | Many foreign services and websites are unreachable, and VPNs themselves get blocked regularly. | Several providers ready to go, obfuscated servers, and accepting that it won't work every day. |
| Turkey | Occasional blocks on social networks and news sites, depending on current events. | A regular VPN is almost always enough. Install it beforehand so you don't depend on local app stores. |
| Iran | Extensive filtering and possible shutdowns, VPN use is heavily regulated. | Thorough research before you go, several solutions and offline copies of everything you need. |
| Egypt | Some calling apps and some websites are restricted. | A VPN installed beforehand, with a second option in reserve. |
Situation as observed in late 2026. A country can tighten or loosen filtering without notice.
The rule that heads off almost every bad surprise fits in one sentence: handle everything at home, discover nothing on arrival. Once you land, the app store may be unreachable, and so may the provider's help page.
For most destinations, yes. For countries that actively filter VPN connections, we bring two. If one goes down, the other takes over, and money-back guarantees keep the cost down.
A server that is geographically close usually gives the best speed. If you want your US services back, like your streaming apps or your bank, pick a server in the United States. If a connection fails, switch locations first before digging any further.
Sometimes, but don't count on it. In countries that filter, the provider's website and the app store may be unreachable too. That is why we keep insisting on preparing before you leave.
It depends on the country. Some allow it without restriction, others regulate it, a few ban it. Our destination guides describe the situation as we understood it, but only the local rules in force count.
